AUCKLANDER'S TRIAL

When the trial of Rex Mbrley Hoyes. a former Aucklander," on'charges of corruptly making gifts to Harold Layers Armstrong■■■'aneTHenry George Bloss, officers of the 'Ministry of Air- „ cralt' Production, was cprj^nu'ed, the Solicitor-General, who is leading the prosecution for the Crown, rea<i a deposition by Sjr Archibald Rowlands, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aircraft Production. This stated that Armstrong came to see him on March 4, 1943, upset and agitated. Armstrong said he had heard the police •were; making inquiries about certain transactions he had had with Hoyes. Armstrong said he had had loans from fjoy©s, and being new to the public service had not realised it was a transgression of the rules. The loans were purely personal. Hoyes, in the y/itness-box, said that he first met Armstrong in New Zealand spme years ago. and met him again in England in 1941. ■ "He met Bloss before .the outbreak of war Hoyes said he had been associated with Cunliffe Owen Aircraft, Limited, since 1936. and held shares in the company. The hearing was adjpurned.
