LIVESTOCK MARKETS

I.A. AUCKLAND, January 5. The entry of beef at WestQeld today was large. Competition was steady, but prices did not reach .those ruling at the previous sale. Extra choice ox made £2 2s a 1001b. An average entry of mutton sold steadily, but values failed to reach late ruling rates. Extra heavy prime wethers realised 20s to 29s 9d. Competition was fair for an average yarding of lambs, but values were lower. Heavy prime lambs brought 25s to 26s Gd. Bidding was steady for a good yarding of quality vealcrs, but plain and unfinished classes brought lower values. Baconers in a medium pig entry sold readily at increased rates, but porker and store values were easier.

l'-A- CHRISTCHURCII, January 5. The continued dry weather caused a substantial Increase in entries at today's Addiugton market and values eased all round, particularly for fat cattle.

The store sheep were below the standard of previous years and prices disappointed vendors. The top figure was 19s Od. The ewes and lambs forward were in poor condition and met with a very dragging sale, prices ranging from 7s 3d to 14s. The quality of fat sheep generally was very poor, and tho worst yarded this season. There was only an^ occasional, pen of attractive young sheep and these were eagerly sought after by the trade at prices not far below recent values. The ewe section contained mostly old sheep, and these 6old at schedule rates.

Because of the dry spell there was a very largo entry of cattle. The market opened much lower than at previous sales, and receded further in the final stages, heavy prime bodies being 40s to 45s a head lower. On an average cattle'were down by up to 40s and prime young steers were down about 255. Best beef made from 50s to C3s per 1001b.

There was a fair entry in the porker section, and the sale was firmer by Is to 2s 11 head on the Christmas market. Competition was Jceen for all classes in the bacon section at late values, the average price per 1b being 8d to B%d,
