CRICKET OPENING

SENSATIONAL PLAY

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES

After having lost eight wickets in making only 11 runs Kilbirnie managed to avert defeat by Karori in the senior grade match at Kilbirnle on Saturday afternoon. Karori had made 153, and it was Dickinson's devastating form which shattered Kilbirnie's hopes, this bowler having taken five wickets for one run when the eighth wicket fell. The ninth-wicket partners for Kllbirnte (Edgar and Fltzsimmons) brought new hope to their side, and, with a lucky break or two, they succeeded in making a great recovery, their partnership realising 110 runs. The last wicket was also profitable, and provided further excitement which reached its climax when it fell with Kilbirnie all square with their opponents. Other matches in the Wellington Cricket Association's openipg series on Saturday also had interesting features, and were in some cases exceedingly close. A fine batting performance by Air Force at the Basin Reserve set Army a stiff task, but the soldier side managed to save the day by having their last wicket intact when time was called. Dentice and Dustin showed outstanding form with the bat for Air Force and Crawford did splendidly as a bowler. .Tor all the good effort in this match, however, no points were gained. by either Bide. The Midland-Wellington side had a win on the first innings over St. Patrick's College Old Boys. A "hat trick" by Blundell, who took five wickets, and a big score by Ongley were features of this match. Hutt, for whom Stehr batted well, had to work hard for a win over Wellington College Old Boys, for whom Gunn was1 the principal with the bat. Good.bowling was done by Ronaldson, Buchan, and Chapman. Runs were not easily made m the Petoue-lnstltute Old Boys match at Petone, which was won by Petone. Asplett and Peacock were leading figures in Petone's success, and Bartlett performed well for Institute. Results were:— Senior Grade.
