NEW PIPE BRIDGE
C9NFERENCE SHORTLY The'Hutt River pipe bridge, built in 1911, has given concern during recent years, for it has shown, evidence of over-straining under traffic weights for which it was never-designed. Its safety is of particular importance to Wellington City, as the Wainui and Orongorongq water mains are carried across the river on the understructure of the bridge. A conference of repesentatives of the City Council, the Valley and Eastern Bays authorities, the Public Works Department, and the Government Town Planner, called for October 19, will discuss the renewal of the bridge. Councillor Knox Gilmer mentioned at the meeting of the City Council last night the handing over of traffic control over the bridge to the American authorities, and said that she hoped that those authorities would- not stop all civilian cars, but would exercise reasonable discretion. _ Whoever had arranged for the Americans to-.-take-over- supervision of traffic on the bridge had done a very good job of work, said Councillor R. H. Nimmo. Before the control was imposed four and five heavy lorries and a bus or two were on the bridge at once. Today vehicles were spaced and speeds were kept to strict limits.
