SLUMP AND CHAOS
POSSIBLE IF—SAYS MR. NASH
The Leader of the National Party (Mr. Holland), said the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) at Petone last night, had talked at Hamilton about the return to private enterprise and competition. A voice: Why not?
Mr. Nash: Does anyone here remember 1929 to 1935? That was exclusively the result of private enterprise and of competitive supply and demand ideas. I would tell him and you and this Dominion that if we go back to the old supply and demand exclusively private enterprise ideas the slump we had from 1929 to 1935 is inevitable again. (Applause.) Mr. Nash sai'. that some people wanted to abolish the Internal Marketing Division and they would probably want to abolish the Export Marketing Department. If they were abolished, he said, the country would be in chaos again before five years had elapsed. "There are no two Departments set up by any country more talked about approvingly by other countries than our Export Marketing Department and our Internal Marketing Division," said Mr. Nash.
