NORTHERN CLASSICS

AVONDALE AND WANGANUI

In pre-war days the Wanganui Jockey Club ushered in its spring gathering a week or so in advance of the Avondale Club, and it was not unusual for horses to contest the Guineas at both fixtures. Last year, however, the order was reversed and, fu 'ther, the northern club held two distinct meetings, on September 12 and November 7. As a result of the amendment the Avondale Guineas was promoted to the first day's card, and that enabled Representative to come south for the Wanganui classic after winning at Ellerslie. Beau Vaals was another Aucklander to make the trip, and in view of the fact that he had won the Flying Handicap at the earlier fixture both he and Representative came in for solid support in the Wanganui Guineas. However, they failed. The same programme was not mapped out for this year's winner at Ellerslie, Balfron, but the runner-up, Royal Heir, and Olga's Pal, who stopped badly, promise to contest the Wanganui classic on Saturday. >

Two Winners. —Back in 1933 Superior, the first of the progeny of the Acre mare Rillet, won the Wanganui Debutant Stakes, and Saturday saw another of 'the family in Master Ted share the honours with Martial Note in the juvenile contest. Whereas Superior was by Colossus, Master Ted is by Brer Fox, an unraced son of Foxbridge and Persis, dam of many good winners.

Likely.—At Woodville last February the Plato gelding Keen Play came with a great finishing run to get to within a head of the winner, Olein, in the President's Hack Handicap. However, he failed in his subsequent outings, but this third at Marton on Saturday hints that he is coming back to his best form.

Coming North. —Gulf Stream, a three-year-old gelding by Tiderace from April Fool, dam of Beaupartir, etc., did his early racing in this island, but was then sent by his owner, Mr. G. A. Lang, of Wellington, to C. Humphries at Riccarton. He had an outing in the Avonhead Handicap at the Grand National Meeting, and showed plenty of pace until his condition gave out. Gulf Stream is expected to come north for the Wanganui Guineas.

Shaped Well. —Prior to contesting the hurdle event at Marton on Saturday Monmouth had been given plenty of schooling in private, but had fallen more than once and his debut was delayed. However, judged on his third in the Okehu Hurdles, it is evident that the Alchemic gelding has benefited by the experience.

Third of Family.—Three daughters of the Paper Money mare Francolin have now won the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton. Ortyx and Gold Flight scored when the event was for two-year-olds, and Royal Flight carried the record further by scoring under the amended conditions, the race now being for three-year-olds.

To Return.—-Figuring among the acceptors for the open sprint at Geraldine on Saturday is All Night, a brilliant but unsound gelding by Nightly. In seven starts last season All Night won three times and was placed * three times. He has not raced since winning the Rangiora Cup last October.

Smart Sort. —Greek Art has won at both his starts this term, his first on the Turf.' At Hawera he registered a very attractive performance in the Wereroa Stakes, and he followed it up on Saturday by taking the Durie Hack Handicap very easily. He is a three-year-old by Phaleron Bay from the Leighton mare Artistry, a sister to Royal Artist, winner of the Wellington Cup in 1933.

Closely Related.—Magnus Lux, winner of the second division of the maiden event at Marton on Saturday, is closely related to Cauda Lux, who missed a place in the first division, although it was probably she who attracted the most support in view of her second to Greek Art at Hawera. Both are by, Gynerium, but whereas Magnus Lux is from Vera Lux, Cauda Lux is from Caput Lux, a daughter of Prima Lux, the grandam being an elder half-sister to Vera Lux.

Bright Outlook.—His ability to sprint as well as stay was demonstrated by Lord Chancellor in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday when he beat a smart field of recognised sprinters. No doubt the outing, was merely a pipe-opener for the Mr. Standfast gelding in view of distance racing to follow. In all probability he will be seen in action at Trentham next month, but local enthusiasts will not have forgotten the boring tendency that cost him the fruits of victory when he was down here last March.

Longer Journey.—Southern reports make it apparent that Royal Flight won the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton without being seriously challenged. The earlier progeny of Francolin have been sprinters, but apparently the opinion is entertained that Royal Flight will mould into a handicapper, for she figures in the Geraldine Cup. The fact that she is by Salmagundi gives her staying power on that side of the family. Promising.—As a two-year-old last season Toora Vale had only one outing, and he had started only once this term prior to running second to Conspicuous at Marton. He is by Musketoon from Wynette, who does not appear to have ever sported silk, and Toora Vale's elder half-brother, Wynardo, did not go far.

Good Family.—Chalette, winner of the Pioneer Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, is a two-year-old filly by Chatsworth from the Chief Ruler mare Rulette, a full-sister to The Begum (dam of Mazir, Stretto, Arvakur, High Caste, Nazim, etc.). Chatsworth is an imported son of Dastur, half-brother to the Triple Crown winner Bahram. Chatsworth was himself a good winner in England, and Dastur won the Irish Derby, King Edward VII Stakes, and Goodwood Sussex Stakes, in addition to running second in the English Derby, St. Leger, and Two Thousand Guineas. Repeated.—As a prelude to undertaking distance racing Representative won an open sprint at Pakuranga, and Saturday saw him take the Avondale Cup, U miles. Lord Chancellor, a stablemate, followed a similar programme in that he won at his first start this term the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, and it will not surprise should he follow it with another win but over a longer jourBold Showing.—Although he failed to show up in his two engagements at the Grand National Meeting Palfrey ran a greatly improved race in the Ashburton Handicap. He was at the rear early, but put in a challenge on the outside in the straight to finish fourth, little more than half a length from the winner.

Staying Blood. —Although he won only once last season, Constitution is bred on lines that suggest he will prove capable of winning other than sprint races. His first win of the term came in the Henderson Handicap, 6 furlongs, at Ellerslie on Saturday. He is by Lang Bian, a staying sire, from Big Bertha, a Romeo mare who was fittingly represented previously by Our Given Away.—The Vaals gelding Sun Valley, who was purchased at the winter sale in July by Mr. S. J. Newland, of Wellington, has been given away and will in future be used as a station hack. Sun Valley showed plenty of speed when raced by Mr. J. B.'Fletcher, of Hastings, but he had not figured in public in his new colours at the time he slipped a muscle while working at Trentham.

Big Figures. —At the National Sales last January Mr. M. J. Moodabe, of Auckland, went to 700 guineas for a colt by Battle Song from Endorse, and later in the sales Mr. S. J. Newland went to 900 guineas for. a colt by Lang Bian from Love of Silver. The nair who now carry the noms de course of Martial Note and Silvio respectively, clashed in the Wanganui Debutant Stakes on Saturday, Martial Note dead-heating with Master Ted for first, with Silvio third. Their next meeting will be awaited with interest.
