AMERICAN ARMY

APPROACHING 8,000,000

Rec. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, September 15.

Of the United States army strength of 7,700,000, to be attained by the end of the year, 2,000,000 will be in the army and air force, according to a statement -by Mr. R. P. Patterson, Under-Secretary for War, at Washington.. • -.

An additional 700,000 men must be inducted, and the War Department had been advised that a substantial number of fathers must be included. The navy also must have additional personnel.

Twenty million were now engaged in war industry, but a labour shortage existed in the aircraft industry and '* voluntary methods had failed to meet the needs.

Mr. Patterson therefore urged the application of the Selective Service Act to industry.—B.O.W.
