"MAN-POWER MUDDLE"
Sir, —I would like to add my views on the "man-power muddle" based on my experience. I am a cheese, factory worker and registered as such under the National Service Regulations. Having been mobilised last year when Japan entered the war, I took my place in the Armed Forces cheerfully because I thought I was going to do a job of work. However, after 15 months' service, ten of which have been spent doing absolutely nothing vital in defence, I applied for my release, as did my employer, but was told that until I could be replaced in my unit (i.e., doing nothing) I could not be released. This, despite the fact that I am medically unfit for overseas and have a young family. To crown it all a man was released from this unit shortly afterwards and no replacement arrived. This shows there is no proper procedure in order to assess a / man's use to his country.—l am, etc.,
DISGUSTED
