The United States Navy Department states: "The United States submarine Grenadier has failed to return from patrol operations' and must be presumed lost. ■' ■ . ■
v. "In the Mediterranean area on August 23 a United. States submarine and two submarine-chasers were sunk as the result; of enemy bombing. ■
"In the South Pacific area on Monday night 15 Japanese planes attacked Funafuti, in the Ellice Islands. One enemy aircraft was shot down. The damage done was slight."—B.O.W.
