A STABLE DOUBLE

BROIVEINE MAKES GOOD

By taking the Marangai Handicap with Broiveine, the open sprint with Whackie, and Martial Note sharing first place in the Debutant Stakes, the New Plymouth trainer H. Dulieu had a good day at Marton on Saturday. At his first attempt in the open ranks, at Hawera, Broiveine had been beaten by Kinsman, but the Broiefort mare took the honours at the Wanganui Meeting quite definitely. Bred as she is, Broiveine should go much further in distance racing. Overdue.—-Last season Whackie, who was usually required to lump big weights, went a long way before he registered a win, but there were occasions, to the regret of ante-post backers, v when he was withdrawn at the eleventh hour. He has commenced activities for the current term in more promising fashion by scoring at his second start to complete a good double for the stable.

First Dead' Heat. —For the first occasion in the history of the Wanganui Debutant Stakes a dead heat was recorded in Saturday's contest when two Taranaki representatives, Martial Note and Master Ted, shared the honours. The former is one of the progeny of Battle Song, being from the Paper Money mare Endorse, the dam being the daughter of Epitaph, who was a particularly brilliant two-year-old herself. Master Ted, who hails from R. Barlow's New Plymouth stable, is by Brer Fox, a Foxbridge—Persis horse who never raced, from the Acre mare Rillet, whose daughter, Superior, won the Debutant in 1933.

Southern Classic.—Winner of the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton at her second start last season, Royal Flight took the John Grigg Stakes, the first of the southern classics, at her second outing this term. She is a Salmagundi filly from that good mare Francolin, who has furnished so many brilliant sorts, and it will not be surprising should Bonny Flight, the latest of the family to sport silk, win honours in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui. Duly Won.—ln view of the fact that he had run an excellent second to Bashful Lady in the Islington Handicap at Riccarton it was anticipated that the Wellington-owned Kevin would not be weighted out of things in the Ashburton Handicap with 9.0, even though che lighter minimum operated. / Howjver, he had little to spare at the finish .rom Foxleap, who had closed her hack career so brilliantly at the Grand National Meeting. Nevertheless, the latter appeared to have been rather harshly dealt with in being given 161b above the minimum at her first tilt in the higher grade. Making Good.—lJven though all his best wins have come on the Ellerslie course, Representative, winner of the AvondsJe Cup on Saturday, appears to be on the high road to fulfilling the big things originally expected of him. He scored in the open sprint at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting, and the fact that he has followed with a success over a mile and a quarter certainly suggests that he will go on with it. Has Come Right.—Although he ran unsighted, Langue dOr impressed when seen at Riccarton last November. The son of the French-bred Lang Bian and Chief Ruler mare Princess Doreen took, some time to open his winning account, the overdue return coming in the maiden event at Ashburton on Saturday.
