GAOL FOR THEFT

A sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed by Mr. J..L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today upon Harold George Newberry, 45, labourer, who pleaded guilty to stealing a clock, two shirts, and/ some bottles of liquor from the residence of a lieutenant-colonel at Paraparaumu Beach.

Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine said that Newberry had assisted an electrician to do some work in the house, and had returned later and taken the articles mentioned in the charge. Mr. A. B. Sievwright said that Newberry was a returned soldier from the last war, in which he had suffered serious injuries. He carried a plate in his head and had only'one kidney. He was a full-time, pensioner who did odd jobs. " » .""

Struck by a bag of salt which fell from a sling on Fryatt Quay yesterday morning, Mr. J. Moore, 40 Aro Street, waterside worker, had his back injured and some ribs fractured. The Free Ambulance took him to hospital.

Alluding to the freezing companies and stating that a greater amount had been collected from them in income tax than from the farmers, Mr. G. Barclay (Democratic Labour) contended when speaking at Oamaru that Mr. Nash was definitely allowing the companies to profiteer so that the Government could' get a "rake-off." These methods were crushing the small com T panics in New Zealand; also the big construction companies were "crushing out" the small builders. This definitely permitted production to go to the big firms which were receiving a "rake-off."
