BEATEN ON VOTE
VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT
MELBOURNE, September 10
• Mr. A. A.. Dunstan's Country Party Government, which has been in office in Victoria for more than eight years, was defeated in the Legislative Assembly today on a. Labour no-confi-dence motion, which was supported by the United Australia Party.
The no-confidence motion was based on the Government's failure to remedy an anomalous electoral position whereby 39 country- electors have equal voting powars with 100 city electors. For many years Labour and the U.A.P. have been demanding a higher ratio for the cities, but Mr. Dunstan has declined action.
The Dunstan Government, as a minority party, was kept in office in the early stages with Labour support, but later broke with Labour and remained in office with the support of the United Australia Party.
The events which led the latter to withdraw its support were concerned mainly with the redistribution of electoral divisions.
