MENACE TO HEALTH

FLOODING OF SUMPS

Concern over an experience which constituted a menace to the health ol the community was expressed at this week's meeting of the Karori Progressive Association's committee, and a decision was made to communicate with the Minister of Health stressing the urgent need of remedial measures being taken. The president, Mr. W. Schierning, reported that, as a result of complaints by residents in a particular area of the district, he had made an inspection and had found that during heavy rainfall house drainage and other refuse gushed out of the sumps. A trail of filth was left, and with it a really bad odour. The fact that there had been some cases of diphtheria in the locality was also disturbing, even though the cases 'might not be connected with the nuisance. It also had to be borne in mind, he said, that diseases followed wars, and in that there was good reason to be on guard against adding to the causes.

Members agreed that the case in point was one for immediate, action, and it was felt that, whatever the corrective measures, the expenditure would be more warranted than much that was being devoted to other work.

A resolution was adopted to the effect that the position be brought to the notice of the Minister of Health with a request that, in view of its seriousness, immediate steps be taken to have the nuisance, with its accompanying danger to health, removed.
