Mr. M. J. Moodabe, governing director of Amalgamated Theatres, Limited, Auckland, accompanied by Mrs. Moodabe, arrived by the Limited express today.

Messrs. L. C. Upton and W. J. Watkins, students of the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, and W. J. Nuttall, an ex-student, were last evening congratulated by the Board of Managers on having passed their final examinations for A.M.I.Mech.E. The two former are continuing in an advanced course with a view to taking the examinations of the Institute of Structural Engineers. The college was one of the first in the Dominion to cater for advanced classes in engineering.

Mr. J. H. Whittaker, president of the Birmingham and Midland Counties' Association since its inception in 1937, was created its first life member at the recent annual meeting held in Wellington.

Mr. D. W. Guthrie, senior surgical officer at the Auckland Hospital for the past four years, has been appointed acting medical superintendent of the Green Lane Hospital. He will be in charge of surgical work at the hospital. Mr.' Guthrie, who is a son of Mr. H. D. Guthrie, of Lower Hutt, was previously resident medical officer at Auckland Hospital for two years before he went overseas to obtain further experience. He studied for his primary fellowship at the University College Hospital and the Middlesex Hospital, London, and then was appointed to an orthopaedic post at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester. Joining the staff of the London County Council medical service, he was posted to various hospitals. He studied for the final section of his fellowship at St. Thomas's Hospital, London.
