SHIPS IN ENEMY CONVOY

(Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, April 30. The Air Ministry reports a successful attack yesterday morning on an enemy convoy off the Dutch coast. Although there were six or seven smaller ships in the convoy, the Germans clearly attached the greatest importance to two larger merchantmen which were protected by three mine-sweep-i ers and six flak ships. Torpedo-carry-ing Beaufighters scored direct hits on both merchantmen, leaving" one on fire and the other listing. Other Beaufighters sprayed flak ships and mine-sweepers with cannon and machine-gun fire. No torpedo aircraft was lost, and only one of the supporting Beaufighters is missing. German sailors threw themselves overboard from a minelayer which was attacked by Spitfires off Ushant today, says the Air Ministry. The ship, of about 1000 tons, was left listing heavily, with smoke pouring from her. Mosquitoes shot up two coal trains in Holland.—B.Q.W.
