ROMMEL'S DEPARTURE
CONFIRMED BY GOEBBELS
(Rec. noon.) LONDON, April 30. Goebbels, in an article published late in March in "Signal," Germany's luxury weekly, and which reached London tonight, confirmed the report that Rommel had left Africa. An illustration in "Signal" shows yon Arnim inspecting an officer's observation post. He is described as "Officer Commanding the Axis Forces in Tunisia." Berlin radio reported that 150 land-ing-barges, escorted by destroyers and accompanied by an aircraft-carrier, passed through the Straits of Gibraltar in an easterly direction. The radio added that for some days there had been heavy traffic through the Straits. Twenty-three merchantmen and tankers left Gibraltar on April 29, escorted by destroyers and patrol vessels. Later th 0 battleships Rodney, Malaya, and Renown, and the aircraft-carriers Furious, Illustrious, and Argus left j Gibraltar with four cruisers and eight destroyers. j
