PARENTHOOD DONORS

SUGGESTION BY MEDICAL

' JOURNAL

LONDON, March 18. "If a man is persistently infertile and if a woman shows no bar to conception, then artificial insemination may be considered," declares the "Lancet" in a leading article advocating "parenthood donors" as a remedy for childless marriages. "Many couples would prefer to have a child at least half their own than to adopt another's," it says. "Both parties must, of course, be willing, and the donor must be of good physical stock and anonymity should be absolute. Failure to produce children is often a major cause of unhappiness. We, as doctors, should do all in our power to help those anxious to achieve fertile mating. Any organisation of the medical service should provide for specialist treatment of sterility. Such treatment might well be given at marriage clinics to which doctors could refer people for advice not only on sterility, but fitness for marriage, the desirability of having children, and contraception."
