CASES REMANDED

Remands until April 5 were granted in the Magistrate's Court today by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the cases against Sarah Anne Vangioni, hotel proprietress, aged 54, Reta Hoban Jacobsen, cashier, aged 19, and Patricia May Love, domestic, aged 24. Vangioni is charged with permitting the Balmoral Private Hotel to be used as a house of ill-fame, and the other two with being in a house of illfame for the- purpose of prostitution. The remand in the case of the first accused Was sought by counsel, Mr. J. A. Scott. ■ Speaking for Jacobsen, Mr. G. C. Kent said he had all his witnesses ready, two of them being present.at some inconvenience. The girl's name had been published, and if the case were not dealt with as soon as possible she would continue to be under a cloud. He had taken pains to secure evidence which, if accepted by the Court, would show that the accused was not only not guilty of prostitution, but not guilty of an act of misconduct, If .the testimony of two doctors was correct, the girl had not been guilty of immorality. The mental anguish of a;■ girl socially ostracised must be tremendous.

Senior-Sergeant* G. Paine said it was considered that the evidence against the principal should be takeu first. The police had been quite prepared to proceed with the case against Vangioni today, and would have taken the other cases- as well.

Mr. A. W. Free, for the accused Love, also spoke against the remand.
