MISSING AEROPLANES
(Rec. 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 24,
The Navy Department announced that Rear-Admiral Robert English, commander of the Pacific fleet submarine force, and also nine other important naval officers in the Pacific area, in addition to :a naval nurse, were among 19 persons on board a naval plane which is missing on a flight between Pearl Harbour and San (Francisco. Radio contact abruptly stopped as the plane circled in the San Francisco bay area, groping in fog for a place to land. An intensive search by sea and air so far has proved unavailing. Lima reports that rescue parties i plunged into the mountains in southern Peru, seeking a plane which is I missing between Santiago and Lima, with 15 persons aboard, including two members of the British diplomatic service. Later. The wreckage of the missing airliner was sighted from the air 350 miles south-east of Lima. Signs of life were noted. A search party is proceeding to the spot.
