THE OLD LIBRARY

GOVERNMENT TAKING OVER

The City Council today approved a scheme whereby the Government will take over the old central library building, spending about £6000, in repairing earthquake damage and making it suitable for their purposes, mainly for the Health Department, though the building will also be used for a time by the Housing Department. The Mayor, Mr. Hislop, proposed that the building should be,granted rent free for a period of five years, after which it would revert to the council. The alternative was for the council to carry out the repairs and charge a rental. There was a good deal of discussion upon the term of five years, which was finally agreed to, the opinion of the majority of councillors being that it was unlikely that the land on. which the building stands will be required for the second stage of the civic block within five years. sThe repairs will not involve the removal of the upper storey, as was earlier proposed.
