TRENTHAM MEETING
A LATE START MADE
Perfect conditions prevailed for the concluding day of the Wellington Summer Meeting at Trentham today, the track being firm and fast. There was a large crowd present despite the fact that the arrival of many was delayed through the train smash en route to the course necessitating the transfer of thousands of passengers. The first race started an hour late. Results up to the time of going to press were: — MUNGAROA HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. £400; 1 mile 3 furlongs. s—4—Stairway, 9.12 (C. A. Bowry) 1 4—3—Nightglass, 10.3 (I. Walther) 2 9—lo—Gunga Din, 9.3 (C. Stokes) 3 Also started: 6-6 Nightray 10.7, 1-1 Madame Rachel 10.4, 2-5 Pastmaster 10.4, 7-7 Cuisinier 9.5, 11-11 Alchemy 9.4, 8-8 Moderate 9.3, 12-13 Peter's Wife 9.2, 3-2 Astute 9.0, 18-18 Gold Land 9.0, 10-9 Grecian Flame 9.0, 15-15 La Nuit 9.0, 17-17 Magic Night 9.0, 16-16 Royal Melton 9.0, 14-14 Straight Left 9.0, 13-12 Stylosa 9.0. Length; half a length. Time. 2.21 i (Winner trained by G. W. New, Awapuni.) A smart beginning by Alchemy enabled him to take up the running in the Mungaroa Highweight from Gunga Din and Stairway, and the three were still prominent heading fOr home, where Nightglass came into the picture. Over the final furlong Stairway finished solidly to win quite definitely from Nightglass, with Gunga Din third, at the head of Stylosa and Alchemy. Pastmaster again ran badly. Dashup 8.0, Flying Ace 8.0, Foxcatcher 8.0, Gamble 8.0, Gold Stand 8.0, Hongi 8.0, Eahuranaki 8.0, Lady Neon 8.0, Nantuckey 8.0, Platinum Wings 8.0, Royal Counsellor 8.0, Silver Mask 8.0, Te Ngarara 8.0, Transcript 8.0. Bracketed: Hongi and Spirit. Nose; two and a half lengths. Time, 1.27. (Winner trained by H. J, Benge, Hastings.) Snowman, who had run a great race on the opening day, won the Trial Plate after a keen struggle with Hippodrome. He promised to be the winner inside the last half-furlong Spirit, always handy, was at an interval with Silver Mask, after being the leader into the straight. Royal Counsellor, Lady Premier, and Jolly Ruler were next.
