1,500,000 Effectives

RUGBY, January 21. The Germans and their allies have lost 600,457 men killed or captured in all sectors of the Russian front since the Stalingrad drive , began on November 19, comprising 334,000 killed and 266,457 captured. A Moscow message, giving these figures, adds that the number of wounded is believed to be about 900,000, making a total loss of effectives of about 1,500,000 men. It is that the exhaustion of Axis has particularly shown :J||self on the Donets front, where f"*ff generals, Oppel and Hoffman, commanded only 3500 combatants. These figures may be compared with those given by the chief of the Soviet Propaganda Department, who said at Moscow that the enemy during the same period lost 6000 tanks, 12,000 guns, and 3500 planes. He put the number of killed, however, at more than 500,000.—8.0. W.

when Mr. Paul Winterton asked him if he thought Hitler was a great man. The third interview was with a 25----year-old gunner. He also was depressed. In his opinion Germany had occupied too much of Europe, and was now short of men. "We thought we would get away with the fight against Russia in 1941," he said. Now 80 per cent, of the German army was fed up with war. From these and other interviews, the correspondent says that he finds the morale of the German army still strong, in spite of its reverses, and sees heavy and long fighting ahead.
