CIVILIAN CLOTHING
EFFORT TO IMPROVE SUITINGS
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. That the Government already had the supply position for civilian clothing under consideration was stated by the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) in replying today to representations by the tailors of Christchurch. Stocks of materials on hand were discussed at a well-attended meeting of city bespoke tailors on Wednesday even--ing and the difficulty of obtaining supplies was emphasised. It was stated that the meeting had decided to place the position before the Minister with a request that further supplies of suitings from New Zealand mills be made available to the trade. Mr. Sullivan said his Department was at present making a. thorough survey of the position in regard to stocks, and other action was being taken. The mission which had -gone to Great Britain from New Zealand was negotiating for the delivery of supplies to this country, and representations were also being made in America. Military contracts were also being reviewed. An endeavour would be made to assist bespoke tailors, hut the success or otherwise of these endeavours would, in the main, depend upon the success achieved by the Government's representations overseas to which he had referred.
