FATAL COLLAPSE OF SOLDIER
Evidence that in his opinion death, had been caused by acute heart failure, to which a heavy meal had cortr tributed, was given by Dr. J. O. Mercer, pathologist at the Wellington Public Hospital, at the inquest yesterday afternoon into the death of Frederick Pitcaithly, a soldier, aged 40, who collapsed when playing tennis at the Plimmerton tennis courts last Sunday afternoon. Another soldier said that partly through a game of singles Pitcaithly stooped to pick up a ball and fell over on his face. "Artificial respiration was applied and was continued for forty minutes under a doctor's supervision. i , Questioned as to the medical examination Pitcaithly must have had before entering the Army, Dr. Mercer said that no clinical examination, nor an electrocardiagraph, would have revealed the .heart condition. A verdict was returned by the Coroner Mr W. G. L. Mellish, in accordance with the medical evidence.
