COCKTAIL AT £2'lß'

Two American servicemen who asked for a bottle of whisky at a hotel just after 8 o'clock one evening were handed a bottle, and received £1 2s change from a 10-dollar bill and a £1 note, which meant they had paid £2 18s lOd in New Zealand currency. The men found later that instead of whisky they had received a bottle of cocktail. They returned to the hotel and saw Archibald William Gilchrist, employed in the office of the hotel, who had sold them the liquor, but he denied all knowledge of it. He repeated his denial to the police, but when the manager arrived he admitted the sale, and the servicemen* were refunded 30s which they had been overcharged. These facts were given in the Magistrate's Court yesterday by SeniorSergeant T. Campagnolo, who said that the defendant acted entirely on his own volition and had no authority from his employer to sell. Gilchrist (Mr. J. A. Scott), who pleaded guilty, was charged with supplying liquor after hours and supplying liquor to a member of an armed force for consumption elsewhere. He was fined £10 and costs on each charge by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M. ,
