OBITUARY

MR. WILLIAM BRIDSON

The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr. William Bridson, who for many years resided in Wellington and was well known in business and sport circles. Educated at Wellington College, Mr. Bridson spent the early part of a long business career with E. W. Mills and Co., and later with W. Briscoe and Co., of which firm he became Wellington branch manager in 1907 and held that post for 17 years before transferring to Auckland to become a partner in the firm of John Duthie and Co., Ltd. (which operated for a time in Auckland as Duthie, Bridson, and Co.). In his younger days Mr. Bridson took an active part in sport, being prominent as a footballer and as an oarsman. He was a member of the Wellington Rowing Club and had a place in one of the most noted fours on record in New Zealand rowing. He won many championships, some of them in Australia. As a Rugby player he was associated with the Poneke Football Club, and was a member of the senior team which in 1889 won the championship without a point being scored against it. He also represented Wellington as a footballer. Mr. Bridson married Miss Agnes Gordon (daughter of the then Chief Inspector of Mines for the Government). A son is Lieutenant-Commander Gordon Bridson, R.N.Z.N.V.R.. who was recently awarded the D.S.C., and who is one of New Zealand's best-known swimmers.
