(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 12. • A German communique states that in the fortress area of Stalingrad the Germans have pierced the fortifications south of the city, reached the Volga, and repulsed all diversionary attacks. Long-range guns on the eastern bank of the Volga are defending Stalingrad A Swiss correspondent in Berlin reports that the Russians are throwing in fresh troops all along the front from Leningrad to the Terek River. Those flung in north of .Stalingrad consist of Siberian riflemen1, who are regarded a Russia's best troops. Moscow reports that General Zhukov's army on the Bzhev front has captured several fortified places, including a stronghold located on a river bend at a crossroads linking several settlements. The stronghold fell to the Russians after a fierce struggle in which it changed hands several times. Berlin radio declared that the Russians at Rzhev. after heavy artillery preparation, launched concentric attacks which exceeded in fierceness and vigour anything previously experienced on this front.
