COMPULSORY REPAIRS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The correspondent "Indignant" stated he knew of one wealthy landlord who "evaded repairs to; a chimney so as to get rid of the tenants and get more rent." , .

"Indignant" must know the landlord could not get \his tenants out by that means without first finding them other suitable "accommodation. The probable reason why the wealthy landlord did not get the chimney repaired, was because he failed to see why he should sign what was in effect a blank cheque.

Only gome 3000 out of 6000 signed the forms authorising the council to go on with the work regardless of cost. In fact the response was so poor that Mayor Hislop suggested legislation might have to be passed authorising the work.

"Indignant" says the .tenants pay ; the same rent though minus the use of the chimney. Let himxheer up. The landlord will have to get the chimney repaired sooner or later, and it may cost him anything up to £20. In addition, he will still have to pay interest on his mortgage or overdraft,. fire premiums, City Council rates, and so on. Landlords to day pay increased costs for everything they need in their business—due primarily to the ever-increas-ing wages bill. - They have not even a union to back them up; They should have, for they can look upon almost any other union and see how "the creaking wheel gets the most grease."— l am, etc.,
