CONSERVATION OF TYRES

(To the Editor.) Sir,—We are being reminded daily of the need to conserve tyres, but is this being done? Motorists who are unable to obtain permits for recapping or retreading will use their worn-smooth tyres for perhaps a few thousand miles, and may I add, a few thousand miles of expensive and dangerous motoring, as once the tyre shows sign of the canvas, numerous punctures and blowouts are inevitable, and the case will be rendered useless. Is it fair to our "All-out,war effort" to allow this? If the motorists were prohibited from using their worn-smooth ' tyres, and these cases kept for retreading for defence purposes, surely this • procedure would at least help to ease the position. —I am, etc., WILL TO WIN.
