AUCKLAND OBSERVANCE

(0.C.) AUCKLAND. This Day. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. A. C. Allum) stated yesterday that a request had been niade to,'him on behalf of the principal religious bodies in Auckland that the two hours from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 3. the National Day of Prayer, be set aside as a special period in which as many people as possible may have an opportunity of taking part in religious observances.

The Mayor said that he was acceding to tho request, which had been made through the Moderator of the Auckland Presbytery, the Rev. J. D. Smith. He proposed to invite all occupiers of shops, offices, and factories who found it practicable to do so to close their premises for the lunch-hour and the remainder of the two hours' period. He.understood that special midday services were to be held in a numbes of churches.

The denominations which have joined in the request for a two hours' observance are the Anglican. Presbyterian, Roman Catholic. Methodist. Baptist, and Congregational Churches, the Associated Churches of Christ, the Salvation Army, and the Society of Friends.
