UNREST DYING DOWN
EFFECT OF GOVERNMENT MEASURES
RUGBT, August 15,
The main news from India reaching London in news agency messages is of a steady improvement in the situation in Ahmadabad, Poona, Delhi, and the. United Provinces.
A communique issued in New Delhi states that since the beginning of the trouble at New Delhi 40 people have been killed and 55 injured. Of the injured 28 have already been discharged from hospital. Benares reports disturbances for the first time; but the situation as a whole suggests that in more or less spontaneous reaction to the Government's measures the unrest is dying down. Bombay's death-roll totals 32, and arrests in Bombay since the outbreak of disturbances are approximately 600. Mobile military police units continue to patrol troublesome areas. A crowd in Allahabad attacked a police station and two persons were killed. There were some disturbances at Ahmadabad. where three arrests have been made in the last 24 hours. Mill work is still interrupted.—B.O.W.
