AWARDS FOR GALLANTRY
(Rec. 9 a.m.) RUGBY-, August 15. Badly burned and with his clothes alight as the result of a fire in the stokehold while his ship was in port, Second Engineer K. Martin^ of the Merchant Navy, nevertheless tackled the outbreak single-handed, although he was aware that highly- inflammable spMt Was stowed on deck immediately over the fire. This action earns him the M.8.E,, and is typical of many for which service and other awards have been given. An example is that of E. L. Brown, leader of a trailerpump crew, who is awarded the British Empire Medal for bravery in extinguishing a fire in a garage in which it was known that a time-bomb Wafe below the floor level, He led in the salvage of some Hundreds of gallons of petrol from blazing buildings, while high-explbsive and incendiary bombs were being dropped and ' the party was being machine-gunned from diving aircraft—B.O.W. , ..■■•• -'■>;■
