WINE AND BRANDY

DRAWING ON AUSTRALIA

The Duhedin Licensed Victuallei-s' Association has resolved to approach the tGovernmenfc to permit the importation of Australian brandy which has been three years In bond instead of the present statutory five years. A Meeting of the association emphasised that the urgency of the position necessitated the Government placing an order With Australia, which Was the only fiourca of supply. Thfe resolution stated that the present demand for supplies of brandy for meditmal purposes was, exceptional. . The following motion concerning the importation of Australian wines was also carried: — ' "That iti View of the impossibility of obtaining supplies of spirits, jaftd the almost certain exhaustion of New Zealand wine stocks before the commencement of the seventh import licensing period, we impress upon the Government the desirability Of restoring the import licences for Australian wines to the 1939 level. As New Zealand wine production does not equal the demand, arid as no Australian Wine has been shipped to Britain for some considerable time, we are confident that a restoration of import licences for Australian wine, in addition to meeting the. local demand, would materially assist our Australian Allies to dispose of their surplus."
