COLOURED TORCHES
SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR TRAINS
In requesting the public when in the vicinity of trains or railway stations to refrain from the use of torches showing a coloured light, the Railways Department instances an occasion on which the misuse of a torch displaying a coloured light might have easily resulted in an accident. When alighting at night from a suburban passenger train near Wellington, a lady passenger flashed a torch showing a green light, which was accepted by the fireman as the right-of-way signal given by the guard. The driver moved the train forward before all the passengers had alighted. Fortunately there were no serious consequences, as tbe train was immediately stopped by the guard.
