GALLANTRY AT SEA
AWARDS TO OFFICERS AND RATINGS
RUGBY, June 9.
The latest list of awards for galr lantry contains many names of officers and ratings of the Royal and Merchant Navies. Among them is Temporary Lieutenant E. O. Gidden, R.N.V.R., who receives the George Cross. He already has the George Medal.
The Order of the British Empire is awarded to Captain A. D. Nicholl, D.5.0., R.N., for bringing the Penelope to port in the face of a relentless and determined air attack at Malta, and on the passage. Others receiving the. 0.8. E. are Lieutenant-Commander A. F. Ferguson Harkness, D.5.0., R.N.R., and four R.N.V.R. Temporary Lieutenants Glyn Jones, W. R. J. Keats, K. J. Townley, and Jai Shankar Meihra, the latter for saving many lives when his Majesty's Indian ship Sparvati was lost.
Captain F. Deighton arid Chief Engineer G. Sisterson also won the 0.8. E., and Chief Officer J. Gundry Midlen the M.8.E., for their respective parts in saving their ship during two passages through unfriendly waters when at» tacked by torpedo-bombers For a similar feat, the 0.8. E. is awarded to Captain W. G. Higgs, and Chief Engineer D. C. Jack and Chief Officer H. G. B. Inkey wins the M.8.E.—8.0.W.
