AMERICAN MEASURES IMPROVE
(Rec, 12.30 p.m.)
WASHINGTON, June 7.
Tho chairman of the House Naval Committee, Mr. • Carl Vinson, in a statement approved by the Navy Department, declared that the United States anti-submarine warfare had passed its initial period and growing pains and was now functioning efficiently. He added that during recent weeks already many enemy submarines had been withdrawn from the east coast and were now operating further to seaward,
Mr. Vinson explains that the navy was confronted with the difficulty of protecting by a limited number of escort vessels troop transports sa well as coastal merchantmen, and adds: "Who will say the navy's decision to divert escorts for troop transports was unsound if it is realised that so far we have not lost one soldier of the many thousands sent overses?"
