ADMIRAL NIMITZ
Admiral Chester William Nimitz, Commander of the Pacific Fleet, is a tanned, white-haired Texan, who entered the Naval Academy in 1901 and Reached the rank of Rear-Admiral on June 23. 1938. He was born at Freder* icksburg, Texas, on February 24, 1885. In 1900-10 and in 1012 he was commander of the Atlantic Submarine Flo» tilla. In the first World War he served bs Chief of Staff to the Commander of the Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, and later in the oftlce of the Chief of Naval Operations, From June, 1939, up to his latest appointment last December, he was Chief of the Bureau of Navigation. Previously he was commander of Battleship Division •*I, of the Battle Force. He is described as a great strategist. As a lieutenant. Admiral Nimitz distinguished himself in the rescue of an' enlisted man from drowning. Despite. a strong tide, he kept himself and the man, who could not swim, afloat. For tbia he received a silver life-saving medal.
