SECOND FRONT AWAITED
FIFTH COLUMNISTS IN FRANCE
NEW YORK, June 6,
The Washington correspondent of the "New ' York Times" says that according to well-informed circles the establishment of a strong second front in Europe, especially with United States troops, would result in the world's biggest uprising of fifth nolumnists in occupied and unoccupied France. The hungry French people await only military developments before turning upon the Germans. The latest news from France indicates that there is at present no immediate German pressure for control of the French fleet, the bulk of which is now based on Toulon. However, Vichy has already given orders for the scuttling of the ships if the British attempt to seize them. Three more acts of sabotage are reported from France. The correspondent of the London "Times" on the French frontier says that unemployed ex-servicemen at Hazebrouck attacked a German military guard and blew up a munitions dump. Berlin radio announced that a bomb on the night of June 3 wrecked the recruiting offices for the French volunteer legion for the Russian front at Rennes There were no casualties, but great damage was done. Paris radio declared that fire-raisers were believed to be responsible for a fire which destroyed a chateau near Tours last night. The damage was estimated at several million francs.
