WRECKED SCOW BREAKING UP

(P.A.) JNVERCARGILL, June 6,

The vessel Marina, which has be<m engaged salvaging the cargo' of the wrecked steamer Waikouaiti, left Bluff yesterday for Centre Island under instructions from the Public Works Department to see whether it was possible to salvage some heavy iron girders in the wrecked scow Horouta, ! which dragged ashore at Centre Island last week. These girders were typ construction work at the Puysegur Point lighthouse. When the Marina arrived it was found impossible to do anything. The scow is fast breaking up, and it is expected that she will be completely gone in two days. The deckhouse and some fittings have been washed, ashore, The engines have apparently gone ' through the bottom of the ship.

The Marina brought back forty drums of oil previously taken ashore from the scow. They had to be,rolled into the surf and then hauled aboard with the Marina's winch, This was arduous and dangerous work in the heavy sea that was running.
