ANALYSED BY SMUTS
SITUATION IN INDIAN OCEAN
RUGBY, June 5,
An analysis of the United Nations' present position relating to Japan, made by General Smuts at Durban yesterday, is noted with particular interest, General Smuts expressed the opinion that the Power which dominates the Indian Ocean dominates the war.
Britain had eased the position by occupying Diego Suarez, but that action had not absolved toe Allies from tho duty of the vigilance necessary to be on the alert and remain the masters of South Africa. Attacks on Ceylon, which he believed would be renewed, and on Sydney were pointers to the Allies.
The prevailing impression in London is that the Allies are making the most of the opportunities to prepare provided by the Japanese delaying to attack India, Ceylon, and Australia, Appreciation is also felt of the vital part which is being played by' China in successfully containing the main part of the Japanese forces until the full strength of the Allies can be developed.—B.O.W.»
