CHAT'S NARROW WIN
HURDLES TO LAPIDARIAN
I (0.C.) AUCKLAND, June 6. A thrilling struggle in the concluding stages of the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie today saw Chat score narrowly from her fellow-southerner Master Lackham, with Clansman practically on terms. In the early stages Clansman took up the role of pacemaker from Master Lackham and Segra, with Chat several lengths back,, but approaching the second last fence Master Lackham joined Clansman, with ] Chat also improving her position. Fifty yards from the post the trio were on terms, and at the post Chat just touched off Master Lackham. with Clansman a neck back. Segra was a good fourth, with Erination. Kinkle. and Dozie Boy next to finish. It was a thrilling finish to a great race. . .In the Campbell Hurdles Lapidanan went to the front early, and he stayed there, winning very attractively from Hessketoon, who, after ranging up to the leader at the last fence, was unable to hold Lapidarian in the run home. There was a gap of five lengths to Renascor, who came from the rear, with Enjoyment fourth. Bright Idea ran a good race, but Kanui Te Pai disappointed.
