SPORTING

CLASSFORM EASILY

TRIG STATION SURPRISES

(By "Binocular.")

Conditions showed a substantial improvement for the second day of the Wanganui Meetiiig at Marton, the weather being bright and fine and the track improved. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £25,398 10s, making an aggregate of £47,035 10s, compared with £56,063 last year. ' Improved by her race on the opening day, Lady Callaghan led practically throughout in the Grandstand Steeplechase and, jumping well, was never in danger of defeat. Over the final circuit it was a three-horse race; slow jumping cost Siegall ground, but her pace on the flat enabled her to come again and beat Hanover by a neck for second. Midiass and Acrobat fell, Blue Note ran off, and Ramilles was pulled up. Making a smart beginning in the CastlecliiT Handicap, Rebel Lady took up the running from Midian Star and Red Glare, and held on to win very easily from Midian Star, who finished a shade better than Red Glare, with Mercury Bay fourth. The favourite, Bendemeer, drew a bad marble and was wide out all the way. After lying, in the body of the field for the first mile and a half in the Century Hurdles, Cuisinier ran forward on the turn to be with Gay Fox at the final fence, and outstayed him over the final furlong. Hunting Lore although he held on for third, found the distance a little too far for him. Dorado ran a good fourth for a fresh horse. Kena, the favourite, was a long way back early and was never in the hunt.

Content to allow Flying Spray to show the way into the straight in the Hurricane Handicap, High Class ran to the front to win very easily from Matalite. with Little Ruse coming along the rail for third. Frustration came home well for fourth, heading off Duality. Showing material improvement on his first day's effort, Red Chief led practically throughout in the Balgownie Hack Handicap to hold off TauUru, who also showed a material improvement. The unlucky runner was the favourite Worton, who was forced back going down the back, and although he finished very solidly he could not bridge the gap. All Bunsby and Hamish ran fair races. Coming from well back over the last half-mile, Classform maintained her run to win the Empire Handicap quite comfortably from Authoress, who was awkwardly placed on the rails behind the leading bunch turning for home. Noble Fox came from a long way back for third, just shading Maestr< and The Monarch, the last-named running a surprising race for a fresh horse. Red Dash, Full Hand, Myarion, and Screen Star all got away badly. The Belmont Handicap, the open sprint, was productive of a great finish, Trig Station holding off Black Robe by a neck, with Soutane and Ring Chief following at narrow intervals. The winner, who paid over a score, got to the front early and just held on. Ring Chief and Saint Tor were right up at the post. Night Eruption was chopped out at the start. Foreign Coin ran up on the turn but then stopped. The biggest dividend of the day was oosted in the Spitfire Hack Handicap when Noble Eagle raced to the front crossing the top to stay there to be close, winning very easily from Darag and Teacony. Self Preservation was fourth, with Tetratina and Cheddington next. The detailed results (per Press Association) were:— Castleclift Handicap, £130; 7 furlongs.—3-2 Rebel Lady, B.S (W.
