MANY NEW PLAYERS

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

Players from all parts of New Zealand were in. action In the Wellington Rugby Union's opening series of senior matches on Saturday afternoon, many of them being in the Services, which are strongly represented ln the competition. For an initial outing the teams generally did quite well, and in most cases they -will be Improved considerably by the experience as well as by changes that are bound to be made. In the large "field" bf participants were many players who have appeared as representatives. Two of the Army teams met ln the main match at Athletic Park, and conspicuous on one side (A.A. Battery) were well-known Hawke's Bxy representatives. J. Brownlle and Holt, with Dais also in the limelight as half. Except for Donovan, the Army side was new, though it had the backing of the former- New Zealand captain, Sergeant C. G. Porter, as coach. Both teams promise to mould into good shape, and that goes for other sides. A notable scoring performance was put, up by T,ramley for Hutt, this player contributing 17 of the side's 20 "points. SENIOR GItADE. A.A. Battery 24, Army. 14. For the Battery, Dais scored two tries and Troy, Little, Lehmann, and ( Brownlle one each, Dafs also kicking a field goal and Bennell converting a try. For Army, Palmer, Haddow, and Stevenson each scored a try, Donovan converting one md kicking a penalty goal.' ' Hutt 20. A.S.C. 17. For Hutt, Bramley scored two tries, converted one; and kicked three penalty goals, and Palmer scored a try. For the winners Woods. Humpherson, Davies, Shirley, and Potiki each scored a try. Calcinai .converting three. For Miramar Gollan kicked two penalty goals Athletic 21", Onslow 0. O'Halloran, Jamieson, Brady. Phelps, Mollier, and Bishop each scored a try and O'Halloran also drop-kicked a penalty goal. Petone 19, Air Force 6. For Petono Hudson and Freeman each scored two tries and White one, Mallett converting two; for Air Force Barrel! and Curry each scored a try. Eastbourne 9, Wellington 0. Griffiths scored a try.. Sanson converting, and Gray kicked a field goal. Wellington College Old B;oys 19. A.N.A. Headquarters 12. For Old Boys, Burgess scored two tries ai^d Vaughan one, Beard converting two tries and kicking two penalty goals. For ; A.N.A. . JJcGavln scored a try, converted by Ralnsfleld, who also kicked a penalty goal, and Mabey kicked a field goal. Johnsonville won by default from Wellington Regiment, which was unable to field its team on Saturday. OTHER GRADES. Junior: Training College 19, Air Force 5; Petone 21, A.N.A. Headquarters 6; Wellington College Old Boys 6, A.S.C. 3; Athletic 12, Hutt 11: Hutt Army won from Wellington Regiment by default. Third: St. Patrick's College Old Boys 13, Poneke 11; Marlst Brothers' Old Boys 10, Air Force 0; St. Patrick's College 3. University Fourth: Poneke 11, Petone 6; Hutt If, Onslow 0; Wellington A 13, Miramar 3; Wellington College 0.8. won from Wellington B by default.

Sixth: Marist 15, Porirua 8: Hutt 17, Poneke 5; Athetic won by default from Eastbourne; Petone won by default from Miramar.
