SCHOOL SHELTERS

COMMITTEES' CONCERN

The necessity for immediate action by school committees in the matter of provision of suitable air-raid shelters, first-aid equipment, and fire-fighting appliances was stressed at a meeting of Wellington school committees held last night. Standard plans, it was stated, had been prepared by officers of the Wellington Education Board, and as soon as plans for any school had been approved by the Public Works Department the committee was invited to inspect them. Standard plans had been prepared for a concrete shelter, with lavatories, to accommodate 100, a covered, timbered trench to hold 50, the reinforcement of basements, and a reinforced concrete pipe shelter. There was now a proposal for a shelter that, with some modification, could be used as a school bath after the war.

A circular was received from the Director of Education detailing the assistance the Department would give and the procedure to be followed in making application.

A motion was carried urging the completion of shelters within two months, and a deputation is to wait on the Education Department.
