Enemy Blow At Rangoon

MANY PLANES SHOT DOWN

LONDON, February 26. The latest news of the Far Eastern war comes from Burma, where Japanese bombers this morning attempted to carry, out a mass air raid on Rangoon.

An official communique says that 21 enemy planes were destroyed in this raid, but news agency dispatches which have been received since then put the total at-27, with seven more probably destroyed.

Reuters correspondent in Mandalay cables that the Rangoon raid involved the biggest air formation yet seen over Burma and says that the Japanese were evidently all out to deal a crippling blow at Rangoon. As the raiders approached, the R.A.F. and American Volunteer Group pilots tore into the Japanese, making straight for the bombers, which broke formation, and dogfights followed.

The raid is described as definitely a failure and the Japanese losses are said to have been out of all proportion to any damage which the enemy may have caused.
