NAZI REPRESSION
GUERRILLAS IN CRETE
LONDON, February 23,
The "Daily Telegraph" says that since the occupation of Crete the Germrns have made every effort to shroud the island in secrecy, but, according to Greek circles in London, the Nazis' plan has met with as little success as their attempt at the subjugation of the Cretan guerrillas.
These irregulars, long since blood brothers of British and Dominion soldiers, are still at liberty in the mountain fastnesses. They range the island nightly, attacking enemy posts arid communications. Their activities have so increased that the Germans have been forced, to adopt new repressive measures. Axis forces, mostly Ger-. mans, have been drafted to the 'island to inflict retaliation on the inhabitants. One village was cleared of its population because the people Avere suspected of aiding the patriots. A hundred people from central Crete and Caridia were sent -to Heraklion as hostages.
