DEFENCE WORKS
PRIORITY CLAIMS
The possibility of both the Public Works Department and the Housing Construction Department being engaged almost exclusively on defence works in the near future was suggested by the Minister in charge of both Departments (Mr. Armstrong) last night.
"The men of the Public Works Department are engaged mainly on defence work now," said Mr. Armstrong, "and it appears that before long they will be engaged solely on work of this nature. Of course it will be necessary to retain some men for essential maintenance work. For example, it would be false economy for the Main Highways Board not to maintain the roads. We have roads under construction which would not be gone on with were it not for the requirements of the defence authorities.
"What applies to the Public Works Department also applies to the Housing Construction Department. We want to build every house possible, but defence must take precedence."
