MAYOR'S CHARGES
ARMY H.Q. BLACK-OUT
Charges by the Mayor that the Army authorities in Wellington had failed to comply with the lighting restrictions during Monday's black-out are being investigated by the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones).
Mr. Hislop stated yesterday that lights were visible from Army Headquarters and that the officers in charge of an Army store in Cable Street had refused point-blank to comply with the restrictions. '■■
Mr. Jones has now sent a letter to the Mayor. k "The statement concerning the Cable Street store is not borne out by inquiries which I made immediately," said Mr. Jones, in an interview last evening, "and I have asked the Mayor to substantiate his statement with further information." The Minister said that so far as Army Headquarters were concerned steps were being taken to see that any weaknesses in the observance of the black-out regulations were eliminated.
