MORE SINKINGS

WASHINGTON, February 24.

The Navy Department announced that a 7000-ton United States cargo ship has been torpedoed and sunk in the Caribbean, 60 miles off the Cuban coast.

Another American vessel has been torpedoed off the Atlantic coast. She is the tanker Republic (5287 tons). Some survivors have been landed.

The United States destroyer Truxton (1100 tons) and the naval cargo vessel Pollux ran aground in a gale off Newfoundland. At least 189 officers and men were drowned. The Navy Department attributes the heavy loss of life in both vessels to the severity of the weather.
