ATTEMPT ON HIS LIFE?
PON PAPEN'S ESCAPE
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) ANKARA, Feb. 24,
Yon Papen and Mrs. yon Papen were thrown to the ground, but not injured, when a bomb exploded 17 yards from them as they were walking along Ataturk Boulevard.
The bomb blew a man to pieces, slightly injured two young girls, and considerably damaged two flats occupied by members of the senior staff of the British Embassy.
Police believe an attempt was made to assassinate the German Ambassador.
Just before the explosion a man was seen walking in the opposite direction to the yon Papens carrying an object wrapped in rags and believed to have been a bomb. The yon Papens returned to the" German Embassy suffering only from shock.
Government representatives have expressed regret and an official inquiry has begun.
